What is Recruitment?
Recruitment is a one week period where you meet all the sororities for various periods of time. The first day you meet all of the groups for about 20 minutes. Then as the days progress you narrow down your choices and spend longer amounts of time with the groups that remain.
At the same time, the sororities are narrowing down their selection so and at the end of the week the sororities write bids. Ideally, the sorority you selected will offer you a bid and you can accept and become a new member!
What Should I wear?
There will be instructions as to what type of clothing to wear to each event during recruitment, but most importantly, choose something that you are comfortable in. You will be meeting new people and walking (especially during the first few days) quite a bit. We definitely don't recommend breaking in your new stilleto heels on open house day. Dress comfortably, that way you are as comfortable and confident as possible and can enjoy the recruitment process.
How do I decide which sorority is right for me?
There are three things that you can do at each event to maximize you knowledge of each sorority and position yourself in the position to make an educated decision of which sorority is right for you.
First, pay attention to how the members of each house treat each other. Are they friendly? Do they seem to enjoy being with each other? Are they comfortable with each other? Are they truly enjoying themselves during recruitment? Recruitment time is the time of the year that sororities, as a whole, spend a great deal of time together. Therefore, it is a wonderful opportunity to see how much they really enjoy each other's company.
Second, pay particular attention to how you feel at each house or talking to members. Is the house somewhere you could see yourself staying up all night with other girls cramming for a final? Would you be comfortable stopping by after a jog for a drink of water? Questions like these help you to judge how happy you would really be in each house. These questions combine how the people and the atmosphere of the sorority make you feel and help to determine which sorority is best for you.
Finally, keep a notepad with you, maybe tucked away in a purse, and after each event jot down a few notes. Ask yourself the questions mentioned above and jot down the answers. Write down the names of the people you talked to and maybe a short description so you are able to recognize them at the next event. During recruitment, you will meet many new people and writing down names can keep you from becoming overwhelmed. Refer back to your comments at the end of each day to make your selections for the next day's events.
How should I act?
Be your wonderful self! The members want to get to know you and in turn you want to get to know them to determine if the house is for you or not. This cannot happen if you are trying to be someone you are not. During recruitment, you constantly want to be looking for a place where you click and feel comfortable. The members are looking for a connection with you as well. Acting like yourself ensures that you will find a house with a group of girls that fit you best, and this connection will be clear to both the sorority members and the potential new member. |
